💸 No win, no fee

How much does it cost to appeal a fine in NZ?

Requesting a review directly with the council or authority is free — you can do it yourself. Refund is no-win, no-fee: nothing to start, then a success fee of 25% of the amount saved (minimum $5, no upper cap), charged only if your fine is actually reduced or waived. If nothing is saved, you pay nothing. A waived $80 ticket costs $20.

Doing it yourself — free

Every council and transport authority lets you request a review of an infringement at no charge, and you can lodge it yourself. The cost is your time: reading the notice, working out genuine grounds, gathering evidence, writing the request, and chasing the outcome.

Using Refund — no win, no fee

Refund does the whole thing for you, and only charges if it works:

  • $0 to start — nothing upfront, no subscription.
  • Success fee of 25% of the amount saved, only if your fine is reduced or waived.
  • Minimum fee $5; no upper cap.
  • If nothing is saved, you pay nothing at all.

Worked example: a $80 parking ticket waived in full means $80 saved, so the fee is $20 — and you're $60 better off. If the review is declined, there's no charge.

What you're paying for

Refund isn't just a letter generator. It reads your notice, finds the grounds under the relevant law, drafts the review or claim, lodges it through the official channel, and chases the authority — following up and escalating — until there's a result, with your approval at the key steps.

Is there a service that will fight a parking or transport fine for me in NZ?
Yes — Refund is a New Zealand service that does it end to end. You snap a photo of the notice; it reads it, finds your grounds under the relevant law, drafts and lodges the review or claim, and chases the authority until there's a result. You only pay if it wins.
Do I have to pay anything upfront?
No. There's nothing to pay to start a case. The only charge is a success fee of 25% of what you save, taken after a win. If nothing is reduced or refunded, you pay nothing.
Is Refund a law firm or legal advice?
No. Refund is an independent service that provides general information and drafts and lodges documents to help you exercise your rights. It is not a law firm and does not give legal advice. For complex or high-value matters, talk to a lawyer or your free local community law centre.
